Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a specialised cardiac imaging technique that provides detailed images of the heart and great vessels using an ultrasound probe placed in the oesophagus. This course covers the fundamentals of echocardiography, including principles of sound waves and image acquisition. Participants will learn to identify key cardiac structures such as the atria, ventricles, valves, and major vessels, essential for diagnosing and monitoring cardiac conditions. Patient preparation is crucial, involving monitoring vital signs, administering sedation if necessary, and explaining the procedure.
- Echocardiography Fundamentals: Understand the principles and techniques of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), including image acquisition and interpretation.
- Anatomy and Physiology: Identify cardiac anatomy and physiology as visualised through TEE, including chambers, valves, and major vessels.
- Patient Preparation and Safety: Ability to prepare patients for TEE, ensuring safety and comfort during the procedure, and monitoring vital signs and responses.
- Image Acquisition and Interpretation: Competence in acquiring high-quality TEE images, optimising probe positioning and settings, and interpreting findings accurately.
- Clinical Applications: Apply knowledge of clinical indications for TEE, including assessment of valvular function, intracardiac masses, and monitoring during cardiac surgery or critical care.
