Mechanical Ventilation Essentials
By Apollo Simulation Centre
Description
The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the need for expertise in mechanical ventilation. Effective management of respiratory failure relies on a thorough understanding of mechanical ventilation principles and staying current with technological advancements. This unique blended learning course provides an in-depth exploration of mechanical ventilation, focusing on its principles, implications, and management strategies. Participants will learn how to initiate and adjust ventilation, understand the effects of ventilation therapy, and prepare patients for liberation from ventilators.
Learning Outcomes
- Respiratory System Anatomy and Physiology: Explore the basic anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system, including how its organs facilitate ventilation
- Waveforms and Loops: Acquire knowledge on interpreting waveforms, loops, and scalars to monitor ventilation effectiveness
- Ventilator Settings: Learn how to initiate and adjust ventilator settings based on patient needs, including restrictive and obstructive lung pathologies
- Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV): Understand and use non-invasive ventilation techniques
- Troubleshooting: Perform troubleshooting to address common issues and optimise ventilation
- Ventilator Liberation: Prepare patients for successful liberation from mechanical ventilation
- Leadership and Team Behaviour: Enhance leadership and team dynamics to improve patient outcomes in ventilatory management

Curriculum
This is a blended learning course that includes an online module and a contact course. The online lectures are interactive and provide learners with a clear understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the organs and the principles of effective treatment. The contact course allows learners to receive active, hands-on training from expert doctors in a realistic hospital setting. ASC maintains the optimal ratio of learners to trainers and a wide selection of simulation manikins. Every learner is provided with ample time and space to practise their skills and perfect their techniques.
