Peripheral Vascular Essentials
By Apollo Simulation Centre
Description
Peripheral vascular essentials encompass the knowledge and skills necessary for assessing, diagnosing, and managing conditions affecting the peripheral vascular system. This includes understanding the anatomy and physiology of arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels. Assessment skills involve evaluating peripheral pulses, skin color, temperature, and capillary refill time to detect abnormalities. Diagnostic techniques include non-invasive tests like ABI, Doppler ultrasound, and venous duplex scanning to assess vascular function and identify conditions such as peripheral arterial disease (PAD) or venous thrombosis.
- Anatomy and Physiology: Understanding the anatomy and physiology of the peripheral vascular system, including arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels.
- Assessment Skills: Proficiency in assessing peripheral vascular status, including palpation of pulses, assessment of skin color, temperature, and capillary refill.
- Diagnostic Techniques: Ability to perform and interpret diagnostic tests related to peripheral vascular function, such as ankle-brachial index (ABI), Doppler ultrasound, and venous duplex scanning.
- Patient Education: Providing patient education on peripheral vascular health, including lifestyle modifications, medication adherence, and signs/symptoms of vascular disease.
- Intervention and Management: Knowledge of common peripheral vascular diseases and their management, including lifestyle changes, medications, and surgical interventions.
